How to Overcome a Career Failure

Failures, quite certainly, have always been a part of everyone’s life at some point. However, if we had decided to tread back after every failure in life, then we certainly would not have reached where we are today.

Everyone in our schools, colleges, and workplaces gave us many tips on “how to become successful in our career” but it would be much easier for most of us if somebody would have told us about “How to overcome failures in our career?” Today, most people of our generation are struggling emotionally as they don’t know how to overcome career failures.

During these often-emotional professional failures, it’s easy to forget all of the positive things you have to be thankful for. Your best work, the accomplishments you’re most proud of, the praise you’ve gotten along the way; all now seemingly insignificant in the shadow of your recent failure.

Understand the fact “Career failure is a part of life”.

Every failure needs to be acknowledged properly and be treated as a lesson for the next step forward. Here are a few ways that you can look at your situation through a more positive lens.

Accept the failure

Failure is a sign that you tried. If you fail to find a job role that you deserve, that doesn’t mean you’re unsuccessful. In addition to that, you need to analyse the problem first and then you would definitely come out with a solution.

Analyse the reasons for your failure

Scheduling a debrief with yourself gives you the forum for objectively looking at your professional failure. Set aside at least a two or three-hour block of time to sit down and write out the order of events that led to the failure.

Acknowledge the real cause of your failure. Think about the mistakes in the process with an objective to analyse properly. Figure out as many factors that led to your failure as you can. This will then help you plan your to-do list for the next step.

Take help from others

Understand that you are definitely not alone. Every year, hundreds of billions of people face rejections and failures in their career. Yet, they have the resilience to come back into game with renewed vigour. Do not build walls around yourself and shut out people who might be of some help.

Share your failure and your current plight with someone who could listen to you genuinely and could help you. Seek help when you need it. You never know who might help you chart your next way forward.

Accept Criticism

We know that criticism sounds too insulting to hear and bear. But to become successful in your career you need to understand that getting feedback and being criticized allows us to see things from the perception of others and it widens the scope of improvement from us. So, accept those criticism and convert those into the action plans for your next move.

Stop over thinking

Once you analysed your mistakes, stop think much about the past mistakes and future threats. This overthinking can raise your stress levels, cause anxiety or depression. Wandering in the past or getting too worried about your future can result in unproductivity and makes you inefficient to perform even the simplest tasks. You need to quit overthinking about the past and future if you want to outgrow your failure.

Upgrade your skill set

Failure gives you a second chance to upgrade yourself. Instead of giving up on your career goal after failing, you should take it as an opportunity to learn from your mistakes. Find your strengths and weaknesses and focus on improving these areas. Learn a new skill that can help you to get that job or promotion.

Regain your confidence

You had enough downtime, now its time to regain your mojo. Instead of worrying about the failure, start thinking right away about how you can utilize that time to be proactive and start proving you have still got what it takes to keep performing. Getting outside of your comfort zone and meeting new people will also help you regain your confidence.

Make your next career move

You may not be able to get out of the after shock of your career failure until you have moved on to your next job.

Leverage your existing connections, build new relationships, start interviewing, and if you are asked about your recent professional failure, thoughtfully communicate what you have learned and how you have taken the initiative to do something positive with that experience.

Don’t be scared of failure

Many people have a fear of failure, which is usually a result or response to a specific situation. But to become successful in life, one needs to let this fear go! Your mindset affects your performance and a mindset with the fear of failure will not let you win. Many individuals give up so many good opportunities because they hesitate to try as they are scared of failing. Fear of failure is one of the most common reasons why people fail in their careers.

Sometimes people struggle too much to cope up with failure and start self-harming themselves emotionally or physically. In such cases, it is best to reach out to a professional career counsellor and take their help to rediscover and rebuild your confidence, self-esteem, and success path.

Taking on your professional failure in a productive way can teach you more impactful lessons than any of your successes if you give yourself permission to learn and grow from it. Show people that you can still perform at your best and they will begin to believe that you have the ability to overcome your failures no matter how big it was.

Understand that failures are indeed the stepping stones to success. When you develop a positive attitude to make peace with negative feedback in a constructive manner, you will realise what failures and coping up really mean.
