Delay in the National Minimum Wage Fixation
Before a couple of months, the Centre assigned a committee to help in deriving a way regarding the national minimum wage fixation. This was something that helps the Indian workforce to help in the right way and hope existed. After the continuous resignation and reshuffles taking place, the processing and finalizing of national minimum wages are delayed further. Its because the two persons- the chairman and one among other members of the committee resigned and the panel stood in the middle of reconstruction. This created a big gap in the process of implementing the law into action and further delayed fixing the national minimum wage.
For a couple of years, the discussions regarding the national minimum wage fixation have been ongoing which thereby jumped as a stepping stone towards social justice. Many experts have been demanding the same for years which be a huge help for the Indian workforce. After the Economic Survey of 2018-19, it too showed that India needs a suitable national minimum wage criterion for the workforce. This can reduce migration to some extent.
After the continuous arguments and demands, it was expected by the trade unions as a benefit for more than 40 crores Indian workers with this national minimum wage fixation. These 40 crore workers come under the part of 50 crore total workers among the entire country, not the world. At the same time, the Gujarat High Court demanded the state government to respond to the important petition got from the Gujarat Mazdoor panchayat. This petition has complained about the non-revision of minimum wage rates by the state government since 2014.
According to the provisions of the famous Minimum Wage Act, 1948, the minimum wage in India should be revised by the respective state government every five years. The non-revision of the minimum wage rates by the state government is a kind of labour laws violation.
